‘It’s always good to be at the top’: A qualitative evaluation of professional and personal experiences of people with intellectual disability and type 2 diabetes.
People with intellectual disability (ID) experience disproportionate diabetes-related morbidity and mortality. To explore the impact of living with type 2 diabetes (T2D) in the context of ID. Purposive sampling was used to recruit 17 participants with ID and T2D, and five clinicians. Data was collected using focus groups and analysed using content analysis. Despite participants describing T2D as ‘not the end of the world’, they also believed it would be ‘always good to be at the top’, described the disease as ‘not nice’ and ‘a chore to live with’. Participants believed that T2D was exacerbated by ID, and in particular, that: symptom identification, lack of insight into T2D and lack of awareness of ID-specific diabetes treatment, contributed to participants’ failure to seek treatment. Clinicians described the considerable difficulty in distinguishing between T2D and ID-related diabetes, describing T2D as ‘an invisible disability’. Clinicians also felt that identifying people with ID and T2D would be difficult and that people with ID may lack the competencies needed to understand diabetes-specific information.
