AutoCAD is designed to streamline the design of objects such as houses and cars. It has a 2D drawing interface as opposed to 3D design (BRL-CAD), and the available features are primarily for 2D drafting, such as creating, viewing, and modifying drawings. However, as a drafting application, the software is extremely versatile and can be used to create complex 3D models.
AutoCAD has been part of the Autodesk software suite since 1986, and it is used by professionals and amateurs alike. It is known for its ease of use, yet powerful design tools.
Installation and Operation
AutoCAD can be downloaded and installed on Windows, Linux, Mac OS X and Unix-based operating systems. Once installed, a user logs in to the application. After logging in, the user can create a drawing or open an existing file. AutoCAD runs as an application within the Windows OS graphical environment, which includes the Windows desktop and all applications.
The user can choose to run the program in the standalone mode or within the Windows GUI. In the standalone mode, the program runs in the background and requires a connection to the system’s network or internet. In the GUI mode, the program runs inside Windows’ desktop window and all the drawing operations (CAD operations) are performed inside the window. The user can access the desktop and all files on the system.
When the program is running in the standalone mode, the user can choose to display the drawing in the model space, layout space, or paper space. The application can run either in the 2D mode or the 3D mode.
Steps to Create a Drawing
The following steps explain how to create a drawing in the AutoCAD program.
Step 1: Open the AutoCAD Program
In order to create a drawing, open the AutoCAD program in the Windows OS. To do this, right-click the title bar of the window and choose Open or Open with, and then select AutoCAD. Once the program is open, click on the Create tab, and select New Drawing.
Step 2: Select the Model Space
In the Model Space option, choose the type of model space (2D or 3D) you want to use.
Step 3: Choose the Template
Choose the Template option to select a template for the drawing. Template is the default choice.
2D tools
In AutoCAD, most tools in the 2D tools section are axis-based. In other words, if you click a tool in the 2D Tools, the tool will align to a user-defined axis. For example, if you use the 3D Drafting toolbar and drag a copy of the 3D Model viewport onto the 2D Drafting toolbar, the copy is placed onto the image plane and the X, Y and Z axes will be all vertical. It does not matter what orthographic view or camera position you use. It just matters that the 3D Model is being viewed in orthographic view.
To zoom in or out, drag the cross-hair at the top of the viewport.
To enter text, use the Edit button on the far right side of the right-click toolbar.
To pan, drag the cursor at the bottom of the viewport.
To rotate, right-click at the bottom of the viewport. From the pop-up menu, you may choose to Pan, Rotate, Center, Move or Track.
To send or open a Drawing Set (DS), use the drawing set button on the far right side of the right-click toolbar.
3D tools
In AutoCAD 3D, many tools are called “3D Tools.” However, they may also have other names such as “Geometric Operation Tools,” “Geometry tools,” “Plane Geometry tools,” or “Solid Geometry tools.” 3D tools are on the right side of the 3D Drafting toolbar. They include models, materials and constraints.
The modeling toolbar provides access to common modeling operations such as Insert, Delete, Move, Copy, Reset and Rename.
In AutoCAD 2011 and AutoCAD LT, the 3D Drafting toolbar has a number of new tools and changes the position of some old tools. In AutoCAD 2011 and 2013, the X, Y and Z axes are aligned in the standard orthographic view (OV). In AutoCAD LT, the Z axis is aligned perpendicular to the XY plane, and a side view, top view or perspective view is selected. In AutoCAD 2011 and 2013, the Drafting toolbar has a new layer interface.
In addition to the modeling tools, there is a variety of geometrical tools for creating, viewing, editing and manipulating model geometry.
