Woodlands Township supervisors voted unanimously last week to halt work on a new four-lane section of the roadway to be built over the county’s notorious sinkhole road, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.
Woodlands Township’s decision last year to halt construction on a new four-lane stretch of Walden Road came after a sinkhole with a depth of more than a half-mile opened up along the roadway and pulled cars and trucks into it.
Lloyd Lambert said he was driving east on Walden Road last summer when he saw the sinkhole for the first time.
“I was about to hit the brakes, but I couldn’t turn the steering wheel, so I hit the brakes as hard as I could,” he said. “That hole is crazy. You can see the bottom of the pit. They want to go in and build a four-lane road over it, but why would they even bother doing that when the road is so narrow? It doesn’t make sense.”
